Attorney General David Wilkinson has increased his lead over his Democratic rival, Paul Van Dam, while State Treasurer Ed Alter is still closing on his Democratic challenger, Art Monson.

But the state auditor's race between Auditor Tom Allen and Democrat Arthur Miller remains basically unchanged. Those are the results of the latest Dan Jones & Associates poll conducted for the Deseret News and KSL-TV.

In the poll taken three weeks ago, Jones found that if the election were held today, Wilkinson, the Republican incumbent, would get 41 percent of the vote, Van Dam would get 30 percent, 1 percent would vote for someone else and 28 percent didn't know who they would pick.

At the end of June, Jones found that Van Dam had closed to within 5 points of Wilkinson, who seeks his third term as attorney general.

But a month later, Wilkinson has pulled away a bit, Jones found, and now leads Van Dam by 11 points.

Jones also found that if the election were held today, 38 percent would vote for Monson for state treasurer, 26 percent for Alter, 1 percent would vote for someone else and 36 percent didn't know.

Monson led Alter by 30 points in an April poll taken by Jones. Alter, also seeking his third term, has been slowing closing on Monson since. Monson is the Salt Lake County treasurer.

The auditor's race hasn't moved much. Jones found that if the election were held today, 27 percent would vote for Allen, 23 percent for Miller, 1 percent for someone else and 49 percent didn't know who they would vote for.

With half the populace undecided in the auditor's race and more than a third undecided in the treasurer's race, Jones said the voting public clearly hasn't made up its mind on those races and doesn't know the candidates well, either.

Jones' latest poll was taken before Van Dam actively started criticizing Wilkinson's actions as attorney general. However, the fact that Wilkinson, without doing any campaigning himself yet, has drawn away from Van Dam shows that Van Dam, a former Salt Lake County attorney, has his work cut out for him.
