Ric Herrin scored 27 points and Nevada withstood a late rally to defeat Weber State 70-64 in a Big Sky Conference game Saturday.
With three minutes remaining and Nevada leading 64-54, the Wildcats pulled to within 66-63 as Elroy Miller hit four points and Jason Joe scored three during the spurt.Matt Williams and Herrin, who had nine rebounds, each sank two free throws in the final minute to ice the victory. Nevada improved to 15-13 and 10-4 in conference. Weber State, led by Miller and Al Hamilton with 12 points each, fell to 11-14 and 6-8. Joe also scored 11.
Early in the second half the Wolf Pack outscored the Wildcats 14-2, with Herrin hitting four points and Jerry Hogan and Kevin Saores each sinking 3-pointers to put Nevada ahead 44-31 with 13:31 remaining. But Nevada could not shake Weber, which kept inching back but fell short at the end.
Nevada scored 11 straight points early in the game with Gerrin and Gary Huskey each getting four points to take a 13-3 lead at the 13-minute mark. Weber closed to 18-15 on two buckets by Jason Joe but faded as the Pack built a 28-22 lead at the half.
Nevada, which shot 27 percent in its previous game, ended up hitting 54 percent, compared to the Wildcats' 40 percent.
