Senior forward Peter Johnson scored 34 points, including 27 in the first half, to lead Southern Utah to a 100-79 victory over Northridge State in a battle of two independents Saturday night.

Dana Achtzehn added 18 points, while Sean Peterson and DaVor Marcelic had 12 each for the Thunderbirds, now 15-11.David Swanson led Northridge (8-18) with 12 points, and Sean Davis contributed 10.

The Thunderbirds jumped to a 29-13 lead with 9:40 left in the first half and coasted to a 52-33 halftime advantage.

Northridge scored 12 straight points midway through the second half to pull within 13 points, 80-67, with 8:08 to play. But Southern Utah came back with seven straight to kill any Matador comeback hopes.

Northridge outrebounded Southern Utah 54-39, but shot only 38 percent from the field, compared to 49 percent for the Thunderbirds.
