If more fathers don't take paid time off with their kids, the government may consider force.
In the interest of sexual equality, the government said in a bill it presented Thursday that it wants to see up to two-thirds of fathers use the parental leave.Sweden gives parents of newborns 12 months off work at 90 percent of their salary. Up to now, parents have had the option of how to divide the time between them. But most don't divide it equally.
The Social Democratic government says only 46 percent of fathers take paid parental leave, compared with 97 percent of mothers.
The national news agency TT said the bill calls for campaigns over the next two years to persuade fathers to stay home.
