The Utah Education Association has created a foundation to provide grants to educators or others who have innovative proposals for helping children succeed in school.

The association's "War on Failure" project is being funded through a one dollar donation taken from each UEA member's dues. More than $16,000 went into the foundation fund in the first year, and UEA leaders hope the fund will grow in the future. One teacher has committed profits from a book to the fund.Proposals for grants from the Children at Risk Foundation may be addressed to 875 E. 5180 South, Murray, UT 84107, telephone 266-4461. People residing outside the Salt Lake area may call 1-800-594-8996 toll free.

The foundation board will consider proposals from educators, parents or groups.

"What we want are intervention programs, strategies and ideas to help children facing difficulties that endanger their success in school," said UEA President Lily Eskelsen. Such problems can be as simple as a student's inability to see the chalkboard or as complex as the many frustrations that cause adolescents to contemplate dropping out of school or committing suicide, she said.
