Davis Phinney withstood a sub-par morning race and recovered from a mechanical failure Friday afternoon to extend his overall race lead to 16 seconds over teammate Alex Stieda after 13 stages of the International Bicycle Classic.

Phinney, 29, Boulder, Colo., finished 12 seconds ahead of Stieda, 27, Coquitlam, B.C., in the uphill 10-mile morning Vail Village Time Trial, finishing in 27 minutes, 35.49 seconds.Inga Benedict, 25, Reno, Nev., claimed the women's time trial fourth stage held on the same course, in 31:24.55. Madonna Harris, 31, a New Zealand native living in Park City, Utah, was second in 31:53.01. Meg Gordon of Cos Cob, Conn., was third in 33:15.01.
