Another group of 30 Soviets is taking up residence in the Salt Lake City this week with the first team passing along the torch to others who will verify that Pershing 2 missile motor production has ceased at Hercules Inc.
The inspectors first arrived in Utah in time for the Independence Day celebration. Along the way, they were introduced to discount shopping, guacamole and fast food.The verification team ensures that Pershing 2 missile motor production has ceased at Hercules Aerospace Group facilities in Magna. The surface-to-air missile was targeted for elimination under the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty signed last Dec. 8 by President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
Hercules is the only facility in the United States hosting a full-time, permanent inspection team. American counterparts are stationed in Votkinsk, USSR.
The first team left Utah on Tuesday and will meet up with other Soviet inspectors in California before returning to the Soviet Union.
