Police are searching for an armed robbery suspect identified by two women jailed after Payless Shoes, 5710 W. 35th South, was robbed Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses told police they saw the two women pick up the robber as he fled the store after he used a sawed-off shotgun to rob two store clerks of more than $800 from the store's cash register and floor safe, according to a police report.The robber, wearing a pink nylon stocking over his head, threatened to kill both female clerks if they tripped an alarm in the store, the report said. Witnesses outside saw him flee the store, pull the stocking from his head while stuffing something in a blue bag, and summon a small, white station wagon that was driving in the adjacent grocery store parking lot.
Officers stopped a white Ford Escort station wagon near 3900 South on 48th West minutes later and arrested the driver and her female passenger. Both women told West Valley City Police officers a 25-year-old West Valley City man had robbed the store.
Two teenage boys walking in the area were stopped by another officer who saw them carrying a sawed-off shotgun. The youths told the officer they saw someone throw the gun from the window of a car.
Another teenage boy called the Salt Lake County sheriff's office after finding two bank bags in the street in front of his house near 3500 S. 48th West. The bags contained $826.70 in bills and change, the police report said, believed to be the money taken during the robbery.
Both women arrested were booked into the Salt Lake City Jail Sunday. One of the women, 18, is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail and the other, 25, was released on bail Monday.
