The Salt Lake Golden Eagles, despite playing for the fifth time in six days and the eighth time in 12 days, defeated the Fort Wayne Komets, 5-3, Sunday, for their 10th straight victory.
The Eagles are now five short of the franchise record of 15 straight wins. They took care of the Komets by jumping to an early 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Tim Sweeney and Kerry Clark; then finished strong after the Komets tied the game 3-3 early in the third period. The Eagles took the lead on a goal by Rick Lessard at the 9:30 mark of the third period and added an empty-net goal by Rich Chernomaz with 37 seconds to play.The Eagles are solidly in second place in the IHL West with a 34-22 record. League-leading Peoria is 42-11. The Eagles return to action Wednesday at the Salt Palace against the Muskegon Lumberjacks to begin a five-game homestand.
