Tyrone Buckmon stole the ball and passed to Scott Roberts for an easy layup as Idaho State defeated Weber State 99-96 in overtime in Big Sky Conference basketball Saturday night.
Weber State trailed 96-93 but had possession of the ball and was working for a three-point shot to tie the game in the closing seconds. But Buckmon stole the ball from Robbie Johnson and passed off to Roberts, who made the layup and added a free throw after he was fouled by Kurt Schwan with three seconds left.Johnson added a three-point goal as time expired, but ISU already had clinched its sixth conference victory against eight losses. ISU improves to 9-15 overall while Weber State dropped to 5-7 and 10-13.
The two teams played even throughout regulation time. The score was tied 39-39 at halftime.
ISU led 79-77 with 53 seconds left in regulation, but Weber State had possession and worked for the tying basket. Roberts fouled Tony Nicholas with 35 seconds left in regulation time, and he made both free throws to force the overtime.
The Bengals opened the overtime period with a 13-4 run, including five from Roberts, then held on for the win. Rodney Jackson led ISU with 24 points, while Kareem Carpenter scored 20 and Alex Kreps added 16.
Roberts finished with 13, including nine in overtime. Buckmon had 17 assists, breaking his old school record and Holt Arena record of 15 set against Northern Arizona earlier this year.
Jackson scored five 3-point goals, bringing his season total to a single-season school record 57. The old ISU record 56 was set by Troy Miles in 1988.
Nicholas and Aaron Bell each scored 17 for the Wildcats.
