David Van Dyke made the first 3-pointer of his career as time ran out, lifting Texas-El Paso to a 72-69 victory over Wyoming in a Western Athletic Conference game.

Van Dyke, a junior, finished with 12 points as the Miners improved to 16-9 overall and 7-6 in league play. UTEP also got 18 points each from Marlon Maxey and Johnny Melvin.Reggie Slater led all scorers with 20 points for Wyoming, which fell to 16-8 and 6-6.

Wyoming's Tim Breaux tied the score at 69-69 with 30 seconds remaining on a field goal and a free throw. The Miners then set up Van Dyke's 22-foot shot from the right side.

UTEP, which led 36-34 at halftime, held its largest lead of the second half at 62-57 with 4:13 left. That lead came after holding Wyoming without a field goal for more than 6 minutes.

Breaux and Paris Bryant each scored 15 points for the Cowboys.

San Diego St. 76, Air Force 59

At San Diego, Arthur Massey scored 20 points, helping San Diego State snap a three game losing streak with a Western Athletic Conference win over Air Force.

Keith Balzer scored 11 points and Courtie Miller had 10 for the Aztecs, 10-13 overall and 5-8 in the league.

Only two Air Force players scored in double figures as Chris Lowry had 15 points and Jim Locum 13.
