City officials retired one of their police dogs because he wouldn't put the bite on crime.
"The dog just doesn't have the backbone in him," said Officer Pablo Godina, owner and former partner of Bullitt, a 4 1/2-year-old German shepherd. "He was too friendly. He was just a big ham."Godina was a police officer in nearby National City when he bought the dog in 1987 and had him trained for police work.
Godina joined the Chula Vista force later that year but wasn't assigned to the canine unit until 1989. In the interim, he kept Bullitt as a pet, and the dog apparently lost his training edge.
Godina, who took him back, says he will be sold as a watchdog.
