The Salt Lake County Division of Job Training and Development and the Utah Office of Job Training for Economic Development have applied to the U.S. Secretary of Labor's Discretionary Fund for a $775,000 grant to help 760 Eastern Airlines' workers recently laid off to get new jobs.

Three weeks ago, Eastern announced the closure of its passenger registration facility in Salt Lake City. If the grant is approved, the county could get the money within 30 days.County officials said the emergency grant would support on-the-job or classroom training, job search assistance, limited relocation help and other services to 250 of the affected workers.

In addition, the Wasatch Front Private Industry Council, the Economic Development Corporation of Utah and Job Service sponsored a job fair for former Eastern workers.
