Carrie White, believed to be the world's oldest person, has died in a nursing home at the age of 116.

White died Thursday at Putnam Memorial Nursing Home, where she'd spent the final five years of a life lived mostly in mental institutions.Marjorie Allen, White's caretaker for the past seven years, said White had been in failing health in recent weeks and had not been recognizing her. But she said that White became alert and responsive again shortly before she died.

White had been named the world's oldest living person by the Guinness Book of World Records, which is trying to determine who now deserves that distinction.

White was born in north Florida's Gadsden County in 1874, when George Custer was still two years away from his last stand.
