Max Baer Jr., who played the hapless hick Jethro Bodine on "The Beverly Hillbillies," was awarded $2 million Wednesday by a Los Angeles jury in a dispute over screen rights to Madonna's song "Like a Virgin." The jury decided that ABC-TV had intimidated the songwriters of the hit tune into awarding film rights to the network instead of Baer, who had submitted a higher bid. During the six-day trial, Baer testified that ABC-TV tried to take advantage of Jethro's "big, dumb-cluck" image, treating him like an "idiot" before songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly.
