The opening round of the Wendy's National Senior Indoor tennis tournament was a costly one for local players. Of three matches involving Utah players, only one was won.

Mike Martines of Salt Lake City, advanced in the men's 45 singles with a three-set win over Jon Ponder of Colorado, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.In the men's 50, Carmen Bolton of New York, rallied to beat Utah's Don McIntosh, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Bob Dice of Arizona, beat Utah's Dick Gallegos, 6-1, 6-2.

The tournament continued Thursday with a full schedule of singles in both divisions.

Among those scheduled to play was Clark Robinson of Bountiful, the No. 6 seed in the men's 45. Hy Saunders of Salt Lake City, was scheduled to play the No. 1 seed in the men's 50.

The tournament will continue with the finals scheduled for Monday at the Snowbird Canyon Racquet Club. Matches are open and free to the public.
