Artist Jane Staplin is conducting a nine-week residency at Westland Elementary School, helping children to develop visual awareness through exploration of color, shape and pattern.

She is sponsored by the Utah Arts Council's Artists in Residency Program. Her visit will "add to and support our existing curriculum by giving our students personal contact with a professional artist," said Principal Larry Fryer.

Staplin studied art and history at Mills College and graduated from the University of Utah in 1974. She has taught since 1985 and has exhibited her works in Utah, New York, Virginia, Canada and Taiwan.
