Activation of National Guard and Reserve personnel for Operation Desert Storm has put a financial burden on families as they change from civilian to military paychecks, so member banks of the Utah Bankers Association want to help.

Lawrence W. Alder, UBA president, said many banks have been assisting families of those called to active duty and will continue to help whenever possible. The Solders' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act passed in 1940 was designed to help people serving on active duty in the military. The UBA has published a list of those people working in Utah banks who understand the law and how it will help active-duty personnel.

Alder said banks have no way of knowing which customers have been called to active duty so it's up to those people or their families to contact the bank for help on how the law applies to them.
