A convicted robber who violated probation was sentenced to write 50 letters to American troops in the Middle East.

Circuit Court Judge Mary Lupo said Tuesday's deal would be worth 60 hours of community service.Karen Grisham quickly agreed, especially after the judge gave the 26-year-old Lake Worth woman stationery and told her the county would pay the postage.

The judge said only handwritten, individualized letters would be ac-cepted.

"The idea of community service is that you pay back to the community something of what you've taken away from it," Lupo said. "I think this is as good as picking up trash on the roadway."
