A Salt Lake man has been charged with abusing a human body after he apparently tried to cut up the body of a woman who died in his house.

Salt Lake police said the 37-year-old man befriended a woman on State Street on Feb. 2 and took her to his Central City home. The woman apparently died while the two were having sex.Investigators said the man apparently panicked and his first inclination was to get rid of the body. He attempted to cut up the body with plans to dispose of it and tried to cut the feet off of the 35-year-old woman.

A few hours after her death, the man finally called 911. Paramedics arrived and determined that the woman was dead. Her body was sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy. Medical examiners removed the woman's socks and noticed the right rear ankle area had been cut in two places down to the bone, according to court documents. Dr. Sharon Schnittker determined that the cuts had been inflicted after the woman had died.

An autopsy showed that the woman - who was suffering from pneumonia - had died from natural causes.

Court documents say the man admitted to detectives that he cut the right rear ankle after the woman died. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and later charged with abuse or desecration of a dead human body, a third-degree felony.
