In Detroit, Sergei Fedorov's power-play goal broke a tie and sparked a five-goal third period for the Red Wings. Fedorov scored 26 seconds into the period, knocking Bob Probert's pass past goalie Bob Essensa for his 27th goal.

In Quebec, Benoit Hogue's tipin with 5:24 left in the third period gave Buffalo its tie with the Nordiques.

In Uniondale, N.Y., Derek King's second goal of the game at 8:03 of the third period broke a tie and helped the Islanders end a six-game winless streak.
