Eddie Gornik, 14, Salt Lake City, finished fifth in a field of 12 in the novice men's compulsory competition in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. It is his first season in the novice division.
"We were really proud of him. He blew the first figure. His nerves really got to him with it being his first nationals, and he was lying 10th," his mother, Holly Gornik, said Tuesday. "He fought back from there and won the second figure, and I think that's pretty interesting. It's good comment on him."Other Utahns among the 187 competitors are Holly Cook, 20, Bountiful, and Jennifer Downing, 18, Salt Lake City, who compete in senior ladies. Gornik also competes in novice men's free skating.
