Brigham Young Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer has converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a school spokesman confirmed on Saturday.
Brigham Young University is owned and sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The NCAA record setting passer led BYU to a Western Athletic Conference championship and an appearance in San Diego's Holiday Bowl.
Raised a Texas Methodist, Detmer was baptized Wednesday during a private ceremony at a Mormon chapel in Lindon, Utah. No public announcement was made.
"He requested it to be as private as it could be," said Ralph Zobell, BYU sports information director.
Nonetheless, the service was attended by more than 200 people, including teammates and coach LaVell Edwards, who was one of the speakers.
Requests for interviews were made, but Detmer was not immediately available for comment on Saturday.
The senior-to-be has been recovering from postseason shoulder surgery.
Also baptized at the same ceremony was Peter Tuipulotu, a junior running back from San Mateo, Calif., Zobell said.
