Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Broderick Thomas was shot twice after he intervened in a scuffle outside a nightclub early Saturday, police said.

Thomas, a 1989 first-round draft choice from the University of Houston, was wounded in the upper chest and his right arm, said Tampa Police Sgt. Russell Bevan.Thomas was listed in guarded but stable condition in intensive care at Tampa General Hospital, where he was taken shortly after the 2:40 a. m. EST shooting, which occurred in the parking lot of Rumors.

"The victim, Thomas, had intervened in a verbal argument between the subject, Frank Taylor Jr., and the victim's friend," Bevan said. "When the vehicle Taylor was a passenger in drove by, Mr. Thomas swung his fist through an open vehicle window, striking the defendant on the forehead."

The blow bruised Taylor's forehead and broke his glasses.

"The defendant produced a small caliber firearm and shot the victim, twice," Bevan said.
