"Parents Who Care Have Children Who Care" is the theme of national PTA Month throughout February.
Feb. 17-23 will be a special week to emphasize the need for parents to get involved in their children's education.National PTA President Ann Lynch is encouraging parents, businesses and educators to work together to "ignite children's desire to learn."
Schools also must remove barriers to easy access by parents to their children's educational processes, she said.
She makes the following recommendations for parents who want to become more involved:
- Read to your child every day.
- Establish a time for homework and make yourself or another adult available to help.
- Get to know and develop a close working relationship with your child's teacher.
- Change "What grade did you get?" to "What did you learn?" focusing on skills rather than marks.
