A second University of Illinois student has died from a meningitis-related illness and the school has stepped up its search for thousands of people who may have been exposed to the highly contagious disease, a school official said.
School spokesman Terry Shepard said sophomore Brian McDonnell, 19, from the Chicago suburb of Darien, died Monday at Carle Hospital in Urbana.Gregory Mank, 19, an engineering student from Belleville, died from meningococcemia on Saturday at Carle Hospital.
Worried students jammed the student health center as the university tried to calm fears on campus and among student parents.
University officials said about 1,300 people received an oral antibiotic Sunday and Monday to avoid serious complications from the bacterial infection. The school told 500 more to seek medical treatment.
Calls were still being made, some to points as far away as Louisiana and California, to inform those who might be affected, Vice Chancellor Stanley Levy said.
