What began as a routine stop of two men drinking beer ended in a shootout that left a Los Angeles policewoman dead, the city's first female officer to die in the line of duty.

The gunman, whom police Chief Daryl Gates described as an illegal alien from El Salvador, was killed by the officer's partner during Monday's shootout in Sun Valley.Killed was Tina Kerbrat, 34, a rookie officer who graduated from the police academy three months ago.
