Saturday's presentation of the Metropolitan Opera performance of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" marked the 1,000th broadcast sponsored by Texaco Inc. - the latest installment in an unmatched record of continuous radio sponsorship that began on Dec. 7, 1940.

Texaco estimates it has spent close to $100 million on the Met since then, some of it in gifts to the company's endowment fund and sponsorship of Met telecasts. The programs have surveyed 123 different operas.Peter Allen was at the microphone Saturday, as he has been every week since the original host, Milton Cross, died in 1975. During the single intermission, Edward Downes presided over the Texaco-Metropolitan Opera Quiz, as he has regularly done for 33 years.
