British Prime Minister John Major arrived in Bonn Monday on his first official visit to Germany and immediately spoke with Chancellor Helmut Kohl before meeting with families of British troops deployed in the Persian Gulf.

His visit follows sharp criticism by some British officials of what they considered Germany's inadequate role in the gulf conflict."We have a lot to talk about," Major said on arrival at the Chancellery, where he was welcomed with full military honors.

Of the $8.5 billion in military aid pledged by Germany, more than $500 million was given to the British military, which has deployed troops to participate in the U.S.-led alliance fighting to oust Iraq from Kuwait.

Kohl is also expected to tell Major that Germany intends to play an even greater role - financially and politically - in rebuilding the gulf region once the war is over.
