Forces of the Vietnamese-backed Cambodian government killed at least 172 resistance guerrillas last week in stepped-up fighting in northwestern Cambodia, the official news agency reported Monday.

"The armed forces of the 4th Military Zone repelled an enemy attack during the first week of February, killing 172 attackers, wounding 190 and capturing 21 others," the SPK news agency reported.It said government troops in the the military zone, which includes the embattled provinces along the northwestern border with Thailand, also destroyed two tanks operated by the resistance.
