U.S. Marines encountered a group of unescorted French journalists Friday at a remote outpost on the Kuwait-Saudi border and ordered them out of the battle-scarred desert area, military officials said.

The outpost is in an area of recent fighting between U.S. and Iraqi troops and near the spot where the vehicle of a CBS News television crew that disappeared more than three weeks ago was found. The journalists, traveling in a private vehicle, were low on fuel and "unsure of their exact location," Chief Warrant Officer Eric Carlson said.
