The Utah chapter of the American Freedom Coalition is launching a project to help ease the financial burdens of families with loved ones serving in the Persian Gulf war, the group announced Friday.
Coalition officials said they want to show "a compassionate and caring heart toward those serving in the Persian Gulf" by offering about $100 - or more in special situations - to families that may need the money.Titled "Share the Burden," the project is being coordinated with local Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, which will take applications and make funding recommendations.
Families designated for donations will receive a check, a letter of appreciation, a "shield of honor" and a videotape of a rally in support of the troops scheduled for Saturday at the state Capitol.
The AFC will provide $1,000 in seed money to the fund, and any donations sent to the group by citizens or groups will all go to military families.
"I'm home doing fine, but my neighbor and his family are enduring great danger and difficulty in defense of human rights," said Kim Shinkoskey, project director.
The group said in a news release that the money is a gift and "should not be perceived as welfare."
