A legion of comedians and two former presidents gathered Friday for the funeral of Danny Thomas, who was eulogized as a "meteor of light and goodness."
Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Mary Tyler Moore, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford were among those who stood on the steps of the Church of the Good Shepherd as Thomas' bier, piled high with white roses, was carried up stairs. The somber, two-hour Mass, attended by 500 people, was marked by warm testimonials to Thomas' endeavors on and off the stage, especially the comedian's founding of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
"And Danny's work goes on," Hope said. "I have it on good authority that God said, `Move over, make room for Danny.' " Thomas was to be buried on the hospital grounds.
The Emmy-winning entertainer, who portrayed one of television's favorite pops in "Make Room for Daddy," suffered a heart attack Wednesday at his home at age 79.
