Uintah High is in good position to take a second straight 3A wrestling title while Layton High holds a narrow lead over pre-tournament favorite Pleasant Grove in the 4A division.

The combined 3A and 4A tournament continues Friday at Weber State University's Dee Events Center and will conclude Saturday when champions are crowned in 12 weight classes in each division.With 78 points following the first 208 matches, Unitah leads second place Sky View with 70.5 team points. Mountain Crest is in third with 66.5 points followed by Box Elder with 44 and Tooele with 42. Uintah still has eight wrestlers in the championship bracket while Sky View and Mountain Crest have seven each.

In the 4A ranks, Layton leads with 62 team points followed by Pleasant Grove at 59, Clearfield at 53.5, Hillcrest with 53 and Orem with 48. Layton has six wrestlers remaining in the championship bracket while Pleasant Grove and clearfield have five each.

Pleasant Grove's Gary Sanderson, in the 140 pound division, is the only undefeated 4A wrestler still in the championship bracket. His record stands at 28-0 with two wins on Thursday. Provo's Chris Miller at 189 pounds, entered the meet with at 29-0-1 record but lost to Weber's John Larsen in his second match.

4A wrestlers with only one loss prior to state and still alive in the championship bracket include Tim Wight, Bonneville and Danny Cabrey, Layton at 103 pounds; Mike Cowdell, Bingham and Johnson Webb, Weber at 112 pounds; James Cotterell, Orem and Tom Hickenlooper, Taylorsville at 119 pounds; Aaron Lightfoot, Taylorsville at 135 pounds; Clint Booth, Hillcrest at 145 pounds; Jeff Kerns, Alta at 152 pounds; Jake Marshall, Skyline at 171 pounds; John Wojciechowski, Clearfield at 189 pounds; and Brian Gertino, Cottonwood, a heavyweight.

Undefeated 3A wrestlers still on track for a state title include Aaron Lee, Ogden, 103 pounds, Kirk Schroeder, Mountain Crest, 152 pounds; and heavyweight Walt Fiefia, Mountain Crest. Those with one loss that are still alive include Cody Peterson, Mountain Crest and Vatana Leuk, Logan at 112 pounds; Layne Argyle, Spanish Fork at 119 pounds; Matt Tonioli, Tooele at 135 pounds; Russ Brown, Dixie at 140 pounds; Bardett Bagley, Sky View at 145 pounds; Sammy Ford, Payson at 160 pounds; and Dustin Adams, Pineview and Cody Lofthouse, Mountain Crest at 189 pounds.

The tournament continues Friday and concludes Saturday with the finals beginning at 6 p.m.
