Mark Meredith scored 18 points and Colorado State made 3 free throws in the final minute to hold off New Mexico 66-61 and end a four-game losing streak on Thursday night.
Ahead 63-61 with 35 seconds left, but foul shots by Aaron Atkinson and Wayne Gipson sealed the CSU victory at Ft. Collins.Five Rams (11-10, 2-7) reached double figures, led by Meredith, who was 4-of-4 from 3-point range. Gipson had 13 points, Chuckie White added 11, and Lynn Tryon and Atkinson 10.
Luc Longley led New Mexico (16-7, 6-5) with 17 points and teammate Rob Robbins added 14.
The Lobos held a 31-30 lead at the half but an 11-2 Rams spurt early in the second half put CSU ahead for good.
Texas-El Paso 57, Air Force 42
At Air Force Academy, Colo., Marlon Maxey and Johnny Melvin each scored 16 points to lead Texas-El Paso to a victory over Air Force in a game that saw the Miners make only 17 field goals and the Falcons 12.
UTEP (14-7, 6-5) led 21-15 at halftime, and the Miners hit 12 of their last 14 free throws.
When Jim Locum hit a 3-pointer with 5:51 remaining to cut UTEP's lead to 43-33, it was Air Force's first field goal in almost 8 minutes.
The closest Air Force (7-14, 1-9) got after that was 51-42 on two free throws from Charles Smith, who scored 15 points. UTEP then scored the final six points.
Air Force hit just 12 of 44 field goals (27.3 percent).
