Guard Hersey Hawkins of the Philadelphia 76ers today was named to replace injured forward Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics on the East team in Sunday's NBA All-Star game.
Hawkins received the highest number of votes among all players not selected as reserves.Hawkins, in his third season in the league, is averaging 21.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
Bird, a perennial All-Star and selected in fan balloting to be a starter Sunday, is out with a back injury.
Meanwhile, Hawkins' teammate, Charles Barkley, who tried to skip last year's All-Star game but was ordered to play by NBA officials, got the same message again this year.
The Philadelphia 76ers forward indicated Wednesday night that his plans to rest his sore left foot while visiting relatives in Alabama over the weekend was nixed by league officials.
