President Bush has decided to nominate U.S. Attorney for Utah Dee Benson as a new federal district judge in Utah, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said Wednesday.

Benson, if confirmed by the Senate, would fill the new federal judgeship in Utah that Hatch pushed to create through anti-drug legislation in Congress last year.Benson is a former top aide to Hatch, was top assistant to Utahn Hal Christensen when he was the No. 2 man at the Justice Department and is even a former professional soccer player - with the old Salt Lake Golden Spikers. He is also the twin brother of Deseret News Sports Editor Lee Benson.

Hatch said he and others submitted five names to the president for possible nomination, and Justice Department officials recently traveled to interview all five. He said Justice Department officials informed him that Bush will nominate Benson.

The other names submitted for possible nomination were federal magistrate Ronald Boyce and state judges Tim Hansen, Michael Murphy and David Young, Hatch said.
