Russell was born March 15, 1904 in Salt Lake City, to David O. and Louise Ostler Barber. He died peacefully, February 5, 1991.He worked for the Denver and Rio Grand Railroad for 50 years. He was an avid golfer, and in his younger days, sang in barber shop quartets.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Gertrude M.; daughter, Mrs. Anthony J. (Joan) Crus; five grandchildren, Linda Verry, Keith R. Barber, Teri Jo Barber, all of San Diego, California; Michael A. Crus and Lisa M. Draxler, both of Salt Lake City; two brothers, Douglas O. and Don B., both of Los Angeles, California; one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by a son, Jay Russell Barber, of San Diego, California.
