Steve McDowell, Southern Utah University's two-time all- Western Football Conference punter, has been named a recipient of the WFC's Pat Malley Award.
It is the second consecutive year that a SUU player has been awarded the WFC's most prestigious honor. Last season Thunderbird offensive lineman Everett Kelepolo was a Malley Award winner. Defensive back Tim Thornbur of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was named this year's Malley winner for defensive players.Earlier, McDowell, a 6-3, 200-pound senior from Gilbert, Ariz., was named to the the GTE Academic All-American First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
McDowell averaged 40.6 yards per punt for the Thunderbirds this season, even after suffering the loss of the front half of his right foot in a lawn-mowing accident last summer.
