The rite of passage that looms largest in many teenagers' lives - and in those of their parents, too - is getting a driver's license, says Susan H. Horwitz of the University of Rochester's Family and Marriage Clinic.
For the teenager, the license is a symbol of greater independence."It's a signal that childhood is ending," says Horwitz. "Teenagers usually welcome that, but for parents it's a bittersweet moment. It's time for them to re-evaluate where their own lives are."
