Kentucky's commissioner of agriculture, serving a one-year jail sentence for felony theft, resigned Wednesday hours before his impeachment trial was scheduled to begin in the state Senate.

The Kentucky House voted to impeach Ward "Butch" Burnette on Jan. 25 after the state Supreme Court upheld his conviction for placing a woman on the Agriculture Department's payroll before she actually started work.Burnette, who was jailed Jan. 19, told The Paducah Sun in an interview published Wednesday that he was resigning out of frustration.
