Salt Lake School District students will pay more for school lunches beginning March 1.
The Salt Lake Board of Education approved increases of 10 cents in the elementary and intermediate schools and 25 cents in the high schools. The increases will be from 90 cents to $1 in the elementary schools, from $1 to $1.10 in the intermediate schools and from $1 to $1.25 in the high schools.
In a memo by business administrator W. Gary Harmer, the increase was tied to rising food costs and decreasing revenue. The district estimated that even with the federal reimbursements for school lunches that it has been losing 6 cents on every elementary meal and 21 cents on every secondary meal.
The State Office of Education memo lists the average state price of an elementary meal as 97 cents and the average state price of a secondary meal as $1.07.
