Festivals for string and piano students will take place this month and next at Southern Utah University.
The piano festival will be Saturday, Feb. 9, co-directed by Lucinda Duncan and Diane Decker, and the string festivals March 23, directed by Marie Boyter. In their eighth year, the Cedar City music festivals are sponsored by the Utah Federation of Music Teachers and hosted by the SUU music department. Last year nearly 800 students took part. The festivals are part of a national network of performance opportunities for young people up through 12th grade. Each student plays a solo from a required list and an additional piece chosen by the student and teacher. Lists of the required pieces are posted at Munson Music.
A panel of three judges comments on each performance, and each student receives a certificate from the national organization. Gold Cup trophies and additional certificates may also be earned.
