George Perles has played his hand according to the rules, but the cards are stacked against his dual role as football coach and athletic director on Michigan State's governing board.

Five of eight members of the university's board of trustees told The Associated Press they're opposed to Perles holding both jobs. Two said they support Perles and one said she's undecided.Perles lost three supporters when one was defeated in the November election, one declined to seek re-election and another gave up her position in January to take a job with the state. He also lost the backing of the governor's office when Democrat James Blanchard was defeated.

The board members said they hadn't heard anything negative about Perles' performance, but they're philosophically opposed to one person holding both jobs.
