Pete Axthelm, a television commentator and writer, died of liver failure Saturday while awaiting a liver transplant. He was 47.

Axthelm worked as a horse racing and NFL commentator for ESPN since 1987. He had worked on NBC's pre-game NFL show from 1980-1985. He worked as a journalist for 24 years after graduating from Yale in 1965. He worked for the New York Herald Tribune, Sports Illustrated and Newsweek, where he became sports editor and contributing columnist.Locally . . .
