Police arrested an American Fork man Friday in connection with the death of Joy G. Kay, Orem.

Kay, 57, was admitted to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center Dec. 24 with multiple bruises, abrasions and a head injury. At the time, Kay told hospital personnel she had been injured falling down some stairs, according to Orem police spokesman Gerald Nielsen.Kay lived in a mobile home with no stairs, however, Nielsen said. The nature of her injuries also was inconsistent with her explanation.

Several hours after she was admitted to the hospital, Kay lapsed into a coma. She died Jan. 16 without regaining consciousness.

Orem Police asked the state medical examiner's office to perform an autopsy on Kay following her death.

Vern Nicholes, 53, was booked into the Orem City Jail for investigation of manslaughter, a second-degree felony.
