Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah, has been named a member of the Research and Development Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee - which oversees research affecting Utah defense contractors and universities.

"Research and Development charts the future of our nation's defense. Its importance cannot be understated," Hansen said.He added that the committee "has responsibility for the development of all new technology" and had oversight "of the Strategic Defense Initiative, the stealth technology for the B-2 bomber and F-117A, the Patriot anti-missile defense system and many programs yet to be unveiled."

Hansen said, "Utah's institutions of higher learning and our defense contractors are active in the development and refinement of high-tech weapon systems important to our nation's future."

To obtain the new seat, Hansen gave up his seat on the Procurement Subcommittee. He is also on the Military Installations and Facilities subcommittee. Hansen's other full committee assignments include Interior and Insular Affairs and the Select Committee on Standards of Official Conduct.
