A Kearns woman has been charged with killing an 11-month-old child that she was babysitting.

Jill Dawn Carpenter, 27, was charged in 3rd Circuit Court Thursday with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Jay Thompson, son of George and Kay Thompson, 3235 W. 3650 South.Paramedics were called to Carpenter's home at 4453 W. 5460 South about 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. When the Salt Lake County rescue unit arrived, the boy was dead.

"We have reason to believe the child was abused," said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Capt. George Q. Nielsen.

The state medical examiner's office performed an autopsy and determined that the boy died as a result of "subdural hematoma" or blood clots to the back of his head. The medical examiner also observed "retinal hemorrhages which were a result of shaking," court documents state.

Carpenter, who normally tended the child about 10 hours each day, told Salt Lake County deputy sheriffs she got the child up about 3:10 that afternoon and put him on the floor to change him.

She said the child's eyes rolled back and he appeared to stop breathing. She said she shook the child, called 911 and then shook the child some more, a sheriff's report states. But prosecutors say Carpenter told a sheriff's detective - after being informed of the Miranda rights - that she shook the boy and he stopped breathing as a result of the shaking, according to documents filed in court.

Carpenter was arrested later that evening and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, where she is being held on $50,000 bail. Carpenter was also booked into jail on a bench warrant for spouse abuse, jail records state.
