New Process Gear, which makes transaxles and transmissions for a Chrysler Corp. joint venture with General Motors Corp., is laying off 101 workers indefinitely.

In addition to the layoffs, which are effective Friday, New Process Gear will shut down for a week beginning Feb. 18, personnel director Havy Carender said. This will be the plant's third weeklong closing since November, not counting a traditional two-week Christmas closing.The layoffs will affect 78 production and material-handling workers, 15 skilled tradespeople and eight salaried employees, said Carender.
