A 4th District Court jury found a 33-year-old Sandy man guilty Tuesday of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, for robbing Smith's Food and Drug in Provo the day after Thanksgiving.
After a day and a half of testimony, a five-man, three-woman jury deliberated for about two hours before finding William Joseph Smith guilty of the crime.During the trial Pete Giles, a Smith's employee, identified Smith as the person who robbed him of more than $8,000 while working at the store's ticket and credit counter. Another witness testified that she saw Smith run out of the store on the day in question and drive away in a dark red car. Employees of a car rental agency testified that Smith had rented the car that police identified as being the get-away vehicle.
Smith will be sentenced Feb. 22 by Judge Ray M. Harding.
